  A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that if people take 30 minutes of meditation every day for moderate or slightly vigorous exercise, they can reduce the risk of death by 45%, UPI reported on March 26.

  The study found that the benefits of exercise were particularly evident for those who exercised at moderate to high intensity for 17 minutes a day. These people tended to be slimmer, more educated and less likely to smoke, so they were less likely to suffer from stroke, heart disease and premature death.

  In this study, researchers studied more than 92,000 people who exercised mildly, moderately and vigorously over the past 14 years. The results showed that even mild exercise reduced the risk of death by 14% compared with sedentary exercise.

  For people with moderate exercise, using mild exercise instead of 30 minutes of meditation can also reduce the risk of death by 6%. Some studies have shown that mild exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease in older women, while others believe that it can reduce the risk of death in all elderly people.

  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a quarter of people die of heart disease each year. Researchers said: "These findings suggest that even mild physical exercise, instead of a small amount of meditation time, can help adults who lack exercise to reduce the risk of premature death.
