Everyone knows that proper exercise is good for health. A study by the National Cancer Institute shows that even starting exercise in later life can be equally beneficial and reduce the risk of associated death.

The study involved more than 315,000 subjects aged 50 to 71. Researchers learned about their physical activity habits and health information in adolescence, youth, adulthood, middle and old age. After more than ten years of follow-up, the researchers found that compared with the subjects who never participated in sports activities, the subjects who consistently adhered to high-intensity sports activities had a 29% to 36% lower risk of all-cause death; the subjects who did not exercise in their youth and started sports in their middle-aged and old age from 40 to 61 years old had a 35% lower risk of all-cause death than those who never participated in sports, and died of cardiovascular diseases. The risk was reduced by 43%.

Although long-term adherence to physical activity may play an important role in reducing the risk of death, evidence from this study suggests that even starting physical activity in middle-aged and old age may have similar health benefits, the researchers wrote in an article published in the 8 th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association Open Online.
