Life lies in exercise, which is good for longevity. A new study released at the 68th Annual Scientific Conference of the American College of Cardiology has found that walking fast every day doubles the chances of 70-year-olds living beyond 80.

Professor Shermers Whelton, a researcher at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States, and his team conducted an in-depth analysis of the medical records of more than 6,500 participants over the age of 70 over the past 18 years. Researchers asked participants to exercise regularly on treadmills or stationary bicycles, to test their exercise stress, and to group them according to the amount of exercise and heart disease risk factors. During the 10-year follow-up survey, 39% of the participants died. The comparative analysis showed that people who walk vigorously every day are twice as likely to live over 80 as those who do not exercise. Even when heart disease risk factors are taken into account, the results are still valid.

Professor Whelton said that the new research results show that fitness level is an important indicator of life expectancy and health. Clinicians can incorporate it into the consultation process and assess the exercise stress of elderly patients by asking about their exercise patterns. This diagnostic method has the advantages of low cost, low risk and low technology. Experts suggest that for people without heart disease risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking, if they do not exercise, their risk of premature death is similar to that of people with more than three risk factors.
